Supercharged R3 Exhaust

Great minds think alike... or at least their computer programs do.

The specs for my custom exhaust system have been run through 2 different computer programs (at 2 different builders) and they are within 2/10" of each other... equal length, of course. They also both agreed on using 3 step primary tubes, with exactly the same 3 step diameters. Interestingly, the 3 step header pipe was also recommended by TrackerJack. Bon travail, Jacque!

I'm going with the reverse cone megaphone for best power... it will be loud.

Are you trying to keep yourself occupied while waiting for your temporary traction fluid cooler?

Having the rear-rear sets should overcome the problem I'll have of having to move the TTS rear sets out to allow the Preds room to pass behind them, but what's the route for the headers going to be?

Is it going to be three into one? If so left or right?

I presume you'll be dynoing before and after. What's it putting out at the moment?

I'm living vicariously right now coz I still haven't got mine back.

Are you concerned about the longevity of other transmission parts as you increase the output of the motor?

Hey Joker, thanks for talking to Richard! He jumped right on sending me a temporary oil cooler. I'm grounded for another week, but will be running soon.

Custom design will be 3 into 1 on right side. The pipes will run down the right side of the engine, just behind the SC intake pipe, not squeezed between rear of engine and frame like Predator design. Obviously to be equal length, pipe #3 has to go forward at first, then reverse. All 3 pipes turn aft and enter merge collector-megaphone.

We're looking for a 10 HP increase at max torque RPM. Easy to dyno before and after, now making max 267HP @ 7000 RPM.

I'm not worried about transmission anymore... not going over 300 HP.

I have tested a reverse cone mega on the 3:1 and it was crap. I expected it would be,but the gent with the bike wanted to try one 'cause they look cool.It was about 10hp worse than a big bore straight thru muffler on the same system.It may be different on a forced induction bike who knows,or maybe I made the mega wrong.I think it would be good on 3:3 exhaust,but thats only my opinion.Have made them for Harley,Guzzi,Ducati and they all worked well 1 for each cyl,but never seemed to work with more than one cyl per mega.

That's very interesting! My first choice was a straight through muffler due to noise considerations, but both computer simulations predicted a 1% HP loss compared to the reverse cone megaphone. However, they both did specify the exact dimensions of the megaphone... could that be important?

Notwithstanding the exhaust debate, what are the views on increasing HP vs. longevity of other transmission parts?

H is now looking at 267 HP, but unfortunately, due to circumstances beyond his control, has not had the opportunity to test this for very long.

What are Hombre's and Nev's (and anyone else who's playing at this level, and yes I do mean you Rid*****or RRMan or Whoever) views on the longevity of the rest of the drive train once you approach, or exceed, 260 BHP

I've got just under 3000 miles on the 267HP. Especially with the supercharger, just cause you've got 270 - 280 RWHP doesn't mean you have to use it all the time. IMO, longevity will be a function of how often you use that max power. I do think it might be a different story with a turbo'd R3, with peak torque in the lower RPMs.

Regarding the question of reverse cone megaphones, here's a quote from a very famous exhaust builder:

For Drag Racing and similar applications where a tailpipe is not required, megaphones fitted with reverse cones are invariably the best option. They make the the most horsepower, maintain the highest and smoothest torque curve, and, on well developed engine combinations with optimally short header tube lengths and a well chosen collector outlet diameter, offer the highest potential power past the peak without compromising the lower end of the power band.

I have no bikes sneaking about with forced induction.The hotting up R3s has gone a little quiet here lately,something to do with our local economy I guess. BTW I am not saying all megas are bad,but the one I tried on a R3 certainly was..
