Strange and Ominous Material Found

Carried the Beast back to the shop this morning where they broke down the rear end and inspected everything thoroughly. There were no problems or evidence of any wear or scraping; and it appears that the theories regarding machining trimmings is correct. Thanks to all for your input and suggestions.

We trudge on.
 

Now that the machining chips are gone I would think the balancing is off as you just lost some weight somewhere.
 
Technically a valid point but realistically those chips probably only weigh a couple of grams.
How accurately do they balance wheels/tires? I don't know how small of increments weights come. 1 ounce? Less?
 
Balancers

Those are low cost balancers, designed to balance the wheel when in motion. I think.
