Hi Johnlyn - I have an early 05, I also use a Garmin 550, which is wires directly to the battery, its fitted most of the time, I use it for music / phone etc, she always starts first time 8) , that aint your problem....

maybe a ride out to a new dealer may help..... :?

Anyone out there with these accessories with the same problem? Or is there someone out there who has the accessories and has no problem? Any suggestions? Not rude ones please.

I run the same equipment with no problems. Do you find your new battery low on volts? Have you had the charging rate checked? I do find that when my R3 sits for a long time in very cold weather it will barley crank. I think this is due to the oil draining bank into the crankcase from the dry sump. After the first start every thing is ok. Note.... in my case I know from checking it wasen't due to the battery. I have a 04 with the same battery and the bike is used all winter long in NJ USA with temps as low as 15*F.

I have been told that the new idle fix tune from Triumph also has a rate boost to the charging system?????? :?

This has got to be BS, The rocket 111 guarantee is two years, so i dont see the problem,,, Go to the dealer you bought the bike from and "TELL" them to sort the **** thing out.

OK John, let's go through this in logical steps.

1) You have a trike conversion

- This is almost certainly NOT the direct cause of your starting or output bearing problems. (Unless they guy who did the conversion screwed the wiring up or did something stupid with the transmission)

2) You have a "starting problem"

- OK, is it battery related - does it turn over reluctantly, then die?

- If so, get a new heavy duty battery. Either a Dekka (or odyssey, but they have warranty issues), or a car or truck battery - you have space for it.

- If it turns over and over and over and won't fire, it's either fuel or electrical. either way, it's a return-to-dealer, imho.

With modern electrics there are 10 independent failure modes. A PROPER dealer with electronic diagnosis will find one (or more) faulty parts in 10 minutes. There is about 75% chance that the first part they tag as "faulty" is the guilty one.

The you get on a path of diminishing returns and escalating charges.

if you stick to your guns, you can in sist the dealer removes any part they put on which DIDN'T fix the problem, and refuse to pay labour for fitting parts that weren't needed.

BUT, make sure you will NEVER need that dealer again!

I remember seeing two Rover silencers in-line on the single exhaust under your seat Lyn... it struck me that two would strangle the gas flow, did you get round to removing one of them?

Probably bears no relation to starting but it might just add to the problem

Need to know if the engine turns over good but does not crank, or engine "barely" turns over and just slows to a stop?
You said that these probs started after engine bearing service, right? Then I would bet they didn't re-ground the battery correctly to the frame. Take everything off the battery and CLEAN the lead posts until shiny. Wire brush all the connectors that go to the battery. Take some 10 gauge wire and hook it to the negative battery post and run the other end under a good bolt to the frame. I added my extra ground to one of the bolts that hold the fender on under the seat.

I know you have probably allready done this, but spark plugs DO come defective from factory sometimes, so replace the plugs and check to make sure the dealer re-plugged in all your coils correctly. Unhook the battery from the bike and charge your battery until fully charged, unhook charger and let it sit for no less than 6 hours and check the voltage. A fully charged good battery will read 12.6 volts. If it reads 12.4 or 12.2 or less, the battery has problems. NEVER charge the rocket battery with more than a 2 or 3 amp charger, or you'll toast the battery after a short while. You can use a 10 amp or 20 amp charger in an emergency, but you will ruin the battery after 5 or 6 times doing that.

Let us know what you find out. Hope this helps!
