Royal Purple Oil

My brother-in-law uses and has used Royal Purple in his Mustang and his 1500 Vulcan sense day one and has had no problems with it. He is a retired motorcycle mechanic. I do not use it due to expense and what is said here. If my bike is doing good on Mobil 1, why change. In other words, If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

As far as protecting your motor, both are fine, the difference is how long between changes. Some riders are sensitive to shift feeling, which may cause you to like one vs another oil.

Best thing for any vehicle is to have 3 oil changes analysed at blackstone labs or equivalent and adjust your oil change interval accordingly.

This is a paper put out by Amsoil (2nd edition). They claim it was done by an independent group. Turn to page 23 and 24 for a summary of the 15 or so motorcycle oils. Note which ones are 1 and 2. Note where Royal Purple is in the 10W-40 weight catagory. 2nd last.

Unfortunately, I can't get Mobil here. Nobody sells it. I can get Amsoil and it has worked well. I guess I was looking for practical feedback from other owners on Royal Purple to see what all the fuss is about. Pricing is in line with Amsoil where I live and I have no issue paying for a premium product. Thanks for the links, I'll do some reading when I'm off my mobile.

I have been using Mobil in bikes for years. Walmart sells it in Swift Current and Medicine Hat, I can't see why Calgary would be any different. I was a Field Technician for Imperial Oil and our chemists could analyze any oil and find it's properties. Castrols bike oil is as good as Mobil. Amsoil is a good oil as well, just not as good. But in the real world you won't tell the difference. The best thing for a clutch is not to keep switching brands.

in an automobile engine i use mobil1 in a \motorcycle i use amsoil

including 2 cycle pre mix oil

i used RP in my sons trans on his mx bike and it fried some trans bearings...so i did it again ...same result...have heard of similar results from other mx dads..

also know of a rear differential that had RP installed,and the pinion bearing locked....thats why i dont care for it..i realy like amsoil though

The constant oil debate continues forever. I've used both Mobil MX-4T and Amsoil synthetics in my bikes. I think both are premium products and I've never heard of an oil related failure with any of the new synthetic premium oils. Actually, I've never heard of an oil related failure even with petroleum based oils! Kill me but this is the truth.
I think the only thing we have to be cognizant of is, is whether the oil is wet clutch compatible. Does the oil have friction modifiers or not.
If you have heavy duty clutch springs...no matter but if not, your clutch may slip without them.
I used Royal Purple in my 383 V8 stroker motor ( 480 HP ) in my Boss Hoss for ten years without a single problem.
Go to any site...either for bikes or cars and you will see this debate goes on forever!!

You are absolutely right Zen. Most people use premium oil but don't even use it for what it is for, kind of cracks me up.

Spends $16/quart, too cheap to pay $20 for an oil analysis, but continues to change oil at 3000 or 4000 mile intervals. Biggest waste of money possible with oil. If you spend the 20 bucks, they will give you oil change mileage suggestions based on the remaining quality and particulates in the oil. The whole point is that the 16/quart might, and often does, be ok for 10-15 k miles.

For that matter, I know people who use premium oil in their performance car for 5k, then drain it, and put it in the economy car for another 5k, then drain it, and use it in lawn mower etc. THAT is using your oil
