Rocket 3 R Hard Starting

Yes, dead serious. The manuals are a bit ambiguous on the subject, but many of us run regular with no pinging or issues whatsoever. I was having rough starts exactly like the OP described and when I switched to regular, it starts right up.

Makes complete sense to me as premium fuel isn't "more powerful", it's actually harder to ignite, thus letting an engine make more power (by advancing timing, increasing compression, etc) without having the fuel prematurely ignite and cause detonation (knock). If your engine is compatible with not needing the higher octane, not only do you not get any benefit from it, my theory is that it can actually decrease some performance as the fuel is harder to ignite than intended. No doubt there's a ton of science here I don't have the details on, but the change in starting performance is undeniable for me. What I don't understand is that when my bike was new, it started just fine on premium, but the rougher starts only developed after ~10k miles. Perhaps there was a change in the fuel/air ration for some reason (dirtier filter, change in tune, etc) or perhaps its slight degradation of the spark plugs, but in any case, switching to regular solved the issue, saves me some money, and I hear no detonation and feel no reduction in performance (for the engine reducing timing by detecting knock). Win-Win scenario for me.

i was wondering about this
makes sense to me
i know it works on the older ones like you said and now i am thinking it works on the new ones

I agree on 87 us gas or even 89 on my 2020gt fire out from first try, on 91 premium or 93 it cranks long time an always fire up on second try! I came from Harley Vrod using always higher grade gas I bean told but on triumph 2020 87 is what the doctor prescribe!!! I was scaptical till I did not try it my self !!!

Use either regular fuel, or mid-grade on my 2020GT.. Premium fuel burns much slower than the more explosive lower grades, and its made that way simply to
prevent engine knock. It also is dirtier on the plugs as some of the fuel doesnt burn unless there is a high compression need for it to suppress knock.

Just had my bike in for general service (oil/filter change) and they updated to the latest firmware (dash/ecm/bluetooth). Service tech said that all Triumphs (not just Rockets) are having hard-starting issues - likely due to the lean ecm map from Triumph for environmental compliance. Curiously, I have not had any hard-starting issues over the past few days since the service. Will update this post with future experience.

Did service lights off by dealership but did not download any ecu updates (additional 150$, plus you have to scheduled appointment for it) And after bike fire up in cold weather from first try in 48 degrees!! In my opinion it was cause buy service light (I was 900 mile on delay ) after resetting service light it start working well no battery change no connection cleaning no nothing!!
