Probably a redundant question, but when changing out the tire, is it the consensus that the shaft needs to be inspected and greased, regardless of Triumph's claims it's maintenance free?

Which part of the shaft are we talking about here that isn't already lubricated?

The oil in the bevel box - is that something that requires changing out regularly as well?

I'm not planning to do the work but it would help to be somewhat informed when discussing it (thankfully the local dealer is a serious engine guy and also an R3 owner, at least at one point, so I feel good about having them work on my baby.)

You need t change the oil in the bevel box according to the intervals, I change mine every time I change the motor oil...
You also need to pull the bevel box where it attaches to the swing arm and lube the splines every time you change tires...

Dave is right grease the splines down by the bevel box. I also change my bevel gear oil more often then the manual states but then I run mine at much higher speeds.

Thanks, that clears things up. In retrospect I suppose this was a silly question, since the parts around the hub are all swimming in bevel gear oil already, the only thing it could have been are the bits where the shaft meets the rear assembly. Oh well, the only really silly questions are the ones you're too proud to ask that come back and bite you in the butt. :)

Crofty, I don't think its a silly question. Good on you for putting this up, certainly clears the mis-conception that the shaft is maintainance free, and its a Honda grease that is the ducks nuts, apparently
