Opening up the instrument cluster?

Has anyone ever popped open the electronic box underneath the speedometer?

I'm wondering if it's possible to replace the light in there with a LED; picked up an extra little wedge LED when I ordered one for the license plate light and now I'm itching to see if you can put one in the dial.

Though a 100 lumen light in there might be overly bright, at that...

I looked it over and it seems to be screwed together with normal screws. Just not sure how wise it would be to try to pop it open...
 
OK.. not sure how far you need to go to change the bulb.. the rear of the clocks pops off easy.. one screw underneath, one on the rear...

However if you need to remove the clock unit completely.. as I did (superglued a piece that was broken in my accident, which then turned the interior of the glass white with the fumes)..

You will need to remove the chrome bezel around the front.. it can be levered up around the lip.. which sounds scary, and looks horrendous, bit if you take your time you can do it.. and when it is folded back down it follows the original crease and fits back nicely.. you wouldn't know it had been done.. I think there is a video on youtube somewhere showing how.. but its pretty obvious once you have it apart.
 
Thanks for the input, the Touring has a completely different instrumentation though, one big tank-mounted cruiser dial. Turning it over after taking it off the bike shows a white box with tons of screws holding it together. So now I'm itching to start dismantling. :)
 
Sorry.. didn't realise it was a touring... but if its screwed together.. it can be taken apart...

Such was my thinking! :) We'll see what I do, it's not like I lack stuff to do, have the bike spread out all over the garage... and all I planned on doing was adding some LED indicators with extra brake/conspicuity lights!
 
Ahh.. You see that's where we differ..
You are adding bits and bling... I remove everything not needed and black out what's left..
It's a good job we all like different things or the world would be a pretty boring place.

Wait.. Did I say boring, with a rocket in ya life that's just not possible
 
It's all pretty discreet bling though, at least when it's not in use. But yeah, I like mine chromed out, considering spending $300+ more just to get a chrome oil tank. The bike looks like ass (and we're talking sweaty plumber, not hot chick) from the left, the engine is really ugly without any chrome there. The side with the headers looks awesome. So it really needs chrome on the left.
