Oh my but what have I done? A KLR?

I believe that's the model my San Diego friend has Nat. And that's great advice on the personal injury insurance, or traveler's insurance as the policies are called in the US. I really do know my limitations and will be taking it slow and easy.
Yes it's an awesome bike , brought it new in 06 and it's decked out for enduro , Seally flighwheel weight , oversized aluminium race tank , heavy duty case covers , bark busters and the addition of a small closed end tube welded into the expansion chamber just at the cylinder port which gives the engine more torque without having to wring it's neck !

That's interesting, I'm having trouble picturing it, or how it works

Good for those of you with giraffe legs.
That Yamaha saddle of yours looks to me to be nose bleed high. I would have to slide my butt over the side of the seat just to get 1 foot on the ground.
Only the Yamaha XT 250 allowed me to sit with both feet on the ground. I would have preferred a larger displacement engine, but could not find one with a reasonable saddle height.

Don't feel bad, Steve, I'm just under 6', the klr was too tall for me, too.

Indeed. I must give Mike credit for being able to handle it, because I don't think he's any taller than I am. Perhaps he too has giraffe legs?

Not at all Steve. My height is 5-11 with a 31 inch inseam. The aftermarket seat makes it just right and there is a 2 inch lowering kit for the KLR if I need it. With the other seat that came with it, which I assume is the stock one, I could barely get my leg over the thing.

And for Nat and all. Last year the friend that I sold my Vulcan Nomad to called me while at Daytona Bike Week. He just met two riders on Electra Glides, a father and son. The first guy got off his bike and introduced himself to Mike. He was 68 years old and the son. The dad was EIGHTY-EIGHT YEARS OLD. There is hope for all of us gray hairs.

I am keeping my eye out for a decent priced xt250

Tis an excellent motor, Amigo! I was very impressed at how well it lugged my 275 lb butt over some very steep terrain and rocks.
Pay attention to the year that started FI (I think 2017) versus carb.
Dan's is a carburetor model (I think 2016) and the elevations, even at Moab, affected his performance.
