The odometer on my 2006 Classic recently died at approximately 30,200 miles. All the other functions on the speedometer continue to work. I consulted with DEcosse, one of the forum's electrical Gurus. He suggested replacing the speedo with an aftermarket gauge and offered to make an adapter harness to mate with the Rocket's harness. The gauges that came close to function and appearance compared to the original gauge are very expensive, $400 to $500.00.
So, not wanting to make an investment like that unless absolutely necessary I started searching for a stand alone odometer that might work. I finally came across a gauge that operates via GPS antenna that tracks speed, accumulated mileage, trip mileage, directional compass, etc. However, the gauge is larger than any of my other gauges, the tach, the clock, the fuel gauge and my handle bars did not have enough room left over to mount this gauge. Plus I'd have to make a bracket for the gauge even if I had room for it on my bars. The gauge is actually designed to fit into a 4" diameter hole in the dash of a car or boat.
Then it occurred to me that I could put the gauge inside the empty air cleaner box thanks to my recent RamAir installation. I left the gauge affixed to the cardboard packing it came in and packed foam rubber around that. With DEcosse's help I wired the gauge to turn on and off with my ignition switch. I tested its' accuracy by planning a few local routes with Google Maps and find the GPS accuracy to be an exact match with the mileage given by Google Maps. The gauge cost me about $60.00 on Amazon with a 10% off coupon. Same gauge on eBay. Went with Amazon thanks to their no hassle return policy.
