New Tune needed if only removing secondary throttle plates ?

I'm thinking to remove the secondary throttle plates (iaw one of the great posts here);
but retain the stock air box etc... not bother with K&N at this time.

I don't own a Tune Boy or Power Commander; seems a big investment
for something I won't use very often (at least once you get it right).

I don't want a lot of intake noise...

What I'm wondering.. like the subject, is if folks think a new tune is
a 100% must have or risk burning valves etc... if you just remove the
secondaries...

Has anyone done just this simple mod? What were their results ?

Would think you would have a problem with that, all it does is get the air in there more efficiently, it dont let any more in than you were getting before so mixture should be the same.
If anything it just gives a bit quicker throttle response.

It would be slightly lean under certain throttle conditions (which are lean down low, and fat up top by general Triumph CPU design).

This lean condition minus secondary plates is greatly mitigated by the factory air intake, since it is only getting 7% more air it was denied-as opposed to 3 KN's and plate removal which is +7% plus 10-20% more air into each thrttle body.

I think you will be OK.

Run triple K&N's and/or Jardines w/o a fueler, is madness though.

I think it would run very lean under certain conditions in the first three gears. This is because the ECU will still think that the secondaries are in and only opened partially and will deliver less fuel as would be appropriate.

I would not do it without retune for reasons the guys said above. You will run slightly lean but depending on what factory tune is on the bike, it may be in first three gears under lower throttle positions or ALL gears under almost all the rev range.

I don't think you'll blow up your bike or burn your valves (in the short term at least) but if you value your bike's condition in the long term you should do things right.

Anyways, who said you only use Tuneboy or PCIII ONCE after it is set up? The bike will run with those mods 24/7 until it is changed again. Good performance comes with a price. Cheap performance will also come with a price. You just won't get the bill until after the shop puts your bike back together.

It has cat eliminator and TOR's with the Triumph tune to go with em. Which doesn't take no secondaries into consideration.

For a budget modification you should look at the resistor modification as outlined by Miami and others. Under 10 dollars and could be combined with the removal of the secondaries. I did that with removal of the air cleaners completely, (ran a filter screen) for only about two tanks of gas. Only damage was I wore out a rear tire! :lol: :lol:
