Welcome from Colorado! Got any pictures?
as for the shifting, i would say its no more clunky than old Harleys or any other big strait cut gear bike, nothing even close to my other bikes. BUT there should be no noise from it when in operations other than the sound of the gears and a bit of a whirly almost windy noise from the clutch but nothing that sounds bad. If there is something bad going on, drop the bottom pan and inspect for chunks, drain the oil into a clean catch pan, dilute with some gas and decant off the oil to inspect any "glitter" that is left behind, same with the oil filter, it can be opened with a can opener, cut the pleats off the rings and inspect for chunks of metal.
When you shift, you will heard a clunking sound, its normal.
