Before heading home from weekend at coast, noticed rear tire was down to belts. I stay on tripometer and reset at each fill-up, so I lost track of milage. I had 8100 original miles. I guess 8000 on the rear is all you can expect from what I've read. Anyway, limped home at 60 mph the whole way. Some guy decided to park his drift boat as I came around a corner. The cars in front of me slammed on the brakes, and I momentarily locked up that bald rear tire, thought it would blow. Anyway, read some threats about Metzellers vs Avons, including something about a recall? Founds Metzellers on Cyclegear for $194/$143 on sale, no Avon VF2/VF1 listed, recall? I think I'll just replace my rear only, maybe get 2000 more from front. Avon rear on Motorcycle Superstore was $277, so just stick with Metzellers. Any thoughts? Will dealer just mount if you show up with tire?

Most dealers will mount whatever you bring in, some charge a little more if you didn't get it from them. I have my tires mounted by the local Yamaha store and they are happy to do it without the 6 week wait my Triumph dealer expects. I too only got 8000 out of the Metz on the rear, 12,000 from the front. The rear pads don't last long either, you might want to take a look at those as well.
The recall you mention was for the touring bike tire, different animal.
Choices are limited ... it's the Metz, Avon or Darkside for the rear and Metz and Avon for the front. Good news is that they seem to mix well, so having a matched set isn't critical.
Those prices suck don't they.

8200 on my Metz

About the same here, I thrashed it a bit at RAA III on the Dragon and a few rough roads trying to keep up with Scowherd and Lonzol and the likes, maybe could have got her to 9000 if I would have stayed with Her3tic.

Have an Avon on now, installed out the door from my Triumph dealer was $400. It is wearing ok but I can break it loose easier I think and the same for locking up the breaks, maybe just in my head.

I will seriously look at the darkside for my next tire. Not much for twisties where I live, and to get to twisties is 500 or more miles of superslab.

Max-Trac recalls 64 Avon motorcycle tires

Tire Business staff report

WASHINGTON (May 14, 2010) — Max-Trac Tire Co. Inc. is voluntarily recalling 64 Avon Cobra AV72 motorcycle tires, size 240/50R16 84V, manufactured at Cooper Tire & Rubber Co. Ltd.’s plant in Melksham, England, between Oct. 11 and Nov. 7, 2009. When undergoing endurance testing at Melksham, one of the Avon tires developed a breaker/ply separation that caused early failure, Max-Trac told the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). Cooper conducted a European recall of all the tires from that production run, and determined that 64 of them had been exported to the U.S., according to Max-Trac, a Cooper subsidiary that does business as Mickey Thompson Performance Tires & Wheels.

Called cyclegear today. Metzeller rear $185 free S&H, sounds a lot better than $400, so no-brainer for me. Thanks for the feedback.

Thats a **** good price, I paid $212 last year and thought I was getting a deal.

My Avon front tire developed a split across the tire at a factory joint. I switched it to a Metz and have been waiting six months to hear from Avon.
