Actually it's an ancient volcanic crater. The water is a deep incredible dark blue so clear you can see the bottom if you look closely. This shot was taken in May as the park roads had just been plowed.

From this picture, the last of your three, I surmise that the central island was a magma core. This would be similar to the Devil's Tower, without the water. Was one a volcano and was one an impact crater.

The boys at work are curious how you shot these pics. From a tripod or freehand? (or some other technical pictury jargon!! LOL) BTW they enjoyed seeing these as well
