loss of rear wheel traction when downshifting

I used to do that on my 06 xl1200c It was my first bike since starting a family and the high comp engine, light weight, and my rusty technique were to blame.

Well, I reckon I need to smooth out my shifting, i don't want to use car tires, and would like my tires to last a bit longer than 3500 miles!
Doing little burnouts here and there, probably hasn't helped my cause either
