Howdy from Arizona!
A ignition switch questions for all of you experienced Rocketeers: from what I have been reading, there has been trouble with the older models regarding the ignition switch. Would this still be a problem for my 2012 Roadster? I haven't seen any updated information on this subject.
Why I ask is, I am thinking of adding driving light to my Roadster, as it is very dark in this desert town. Found the lights, was thinking of having them power on when I hit the high beams, as opposed to having a seperate switch. Can I do all of this to my stock system? Would I still need to do the relay to cut the headlights off during the starting cycle?
Does anybody make a switch relocation kit for the Roadster yet?
Thank you in advance for you help!

Someone will correct me if Im wrong here but I heard Triumph had fixed the problem but I seem to remember someone did have an issue on a later model..

Having said that I would advise any additional lighting should go through a relay and an inline fuse for safety anyway.

First, welcome to the site and your Rocket ownership.

Let me start with dispelling a myth. The stock circuitry on the Rocket Standard, Classic and Roadster has always had a relay that cuts the headlights off when you hit the starter button. When you hit the starter button, the relay activates and reroutes the power from the headlight circuit to the starter circuit.

The problem with the pre-2011 models is that the entire headlight power is routed through the ignition switch. In other words, other than when the starter button is pressed, all the amps flow through the ignition switch. Thus the need for the H4 relay kits.

Midway through 2011 Triumph introduced a recall to add a relay to the headlight circuit. You should be good with your 2012.

As far as adding driving lights, you should check your local laws regarding auxiliary lighting when running high beams. It is illegal in most states. At my last inspection, the inspector let me slide by but he reminded me that driving lights can only be active with low beams.

If you add lights and want them to activate on either low (legal) or high (probably illegal) beams, you will have to add a relay to the circuit.

Thanks Dennsell & Tdragger for the quick response! Sound advise from both of ya's; I will proceed with my up grade!

Laws sure differ. Over here (in the ACT at least) it's illegal to run driving lights on anything but high beam. Not sure why you'd want them on low beam. Fog lights (amber or clear) set low down can be run on low beam or high beam. All auxiliary lights, even if connected to the stock light/dimming switches, must have an independent switch as well so they can be turned off.

You should always run extra lights through a relay to protect your switches.
