Hi folks,

I am trying to swap my brushed aluminum tank cap for a fancy CF cap and I need to take the original of its base, but the question is how? It feels like the cap is held place by a pin but I am not certain how to remove it, do I punch it out? I’ve tried using a hex key on the pin but that doesn’t seem to do anything. Any ideas?

Are you sure it's a replacement rather than a cover that goes on top of the stock cap? The stock cap/hinge/ring looks like a single unit, attached to the tank with three screws. There's no separate part numbers for the hinge, ring, or cap.

They might not be sold separate by Triumph but they are most certainly 2 parts held together by means of a hinge (pin).

Correct, but that doesn't mean it's designed to be taken apart. That's why I said that it appears to be a single unit--neither end has a drive and I doubt it's a pin-and-sleeve like a watch bracelet's links might use.

The CF fuel tank "caps" offered by CarbonFBR, KR-Techno, and CarbonFiberRacing are all just covers for the stock caps rather than replacements, probably for this reason.

I have to correct you the KR-Techno gas tank cap is not just a cheap Chinese cover that goes over the OEM cap.

The OEM locking pin is inserted and then expanded on both sides. The hole in the base is a smaller diameter than the holes in the OEM cap, you need to drill out the pin and then you can put the amazing KR-Techno cap on in place of the OEM.
