For what it's worth, NY is a very large state. It is common for many who have not visited there to think that NY City IS NY. Not so.
NYC is maybe 1 or 2% of NY land wise. The rest of the state (AKA Upstate NY) even has things like cows, horses, farms, lakes, mountains, clean water, polite people etc.
NYC is the definition of the rat race. There simply is no way to practice social distancing to control a virus with the sheer density of the population there once it takes hold.
It is truly a global melting pot and people poured in from infected countries before flights were stopped and it will take more time & effort to contain it.
If you look at the county-by-county map, 95% of the NY COVID-19 cases are in and around NYC. The majority of the state is similar to the rest of the U.S.
For instance, my county Monroe has 1 million inhabitants and only 160 cases - less than a couple of counties in Georgia.
