Also I have the matte black finish...dealer has recommended cleaning with soapy water but I was just wondering if anybody uses anything on the paintwork to protect against the likes of bird lime etc...

Hello Paul and welcome from Virginia. I keep my bike outside as I do not have a garage. My cover of choice is the biggest DOWCO. It has been in service for 2 years now and still works well. The picture is the cover being cleaned off by my Pretty Pillion.
Not sure about washing a bike, I just ride in the rain to knock the big chunks off.
