Greetings from NJ. Thank you for accepting me. Afer first long trip wit my Flying Fortress ( RIIIT ) I noticed lots backfires in a mufflers. Im used to use premium octane with my other bikes but I noticed in manual different on RIIIT , it says 87. What is correct octane recommended in US? Im reading different opinions from a members .
Is it decel popping? Do you have any idea if you have aftermarket air filter or exhaust, or maybe TORS? If you do have that has it been tuned for it? Just a few questions to help figure it out. It should run just fine on 87.

Sounds like someone took the cats out of it. Are you sure the stock exhaust is unmodified?
All rockets pop a little bit. But the mufflers really do a good job at making it not noticable.
Kindof misleading to say that when any higher rates fuel will run just a s good with no benefits just higher cost. Well anything you get at most pumps that is!

Ah? Ok?
What you said "87 will run better" is sort of misleading to anyone who has no clue about octane like OP ( original poster) Kemes. It implies that the other grades of fuel will not run the same. You can always use a higher octane fuel on any engine that that only requires low grade 87. Higher octane rating only means it requires a higher pressure to knock (predetination) and nothing else. There is 0.000% power increase or any other results of using a higher grade fuel except for cost.
I would expect you to know about octane ratings.
Hope I cleared up what I meant to say before.
