Good point flip. I was just noticing the other day that the gap in the lever might be too large. I thought it should only be 1/8" (0.125) but didnt pay much attention as it seems to shift fine. After 5000 miles the shifting has dramatically improved. What do ya think? shold I adjust to get the lever gap back to 1/8 or look at the casing adjusment?
I'd use the bell crank (casing adjustment). I tend to keep the handlebar cable adjustment slot facing rearward on all my bikes. That way, you don't get any rain blowing in the cable liner and rusting the cable.
I tend to run all my bikes with 1/8" or slightly less freeplay at the lever. Would be nice to have a hydraulic slave unit. I put one on my KLR and it made a big difference in actuation effort plus it's self adjusting.
The manual gives a spec for cable play, but the idea is to adjust it so that you get the most travel without it riding on the pressure plate. I keep mine as close tolerance as possible so I check it often, if you don't plan on checking it ... go with the cable play specification. 2-3mm free play.
