As Paul said, it is important to line the axle up with the swing-arm. The spacer is probably the one on the axle and would need to be fitted to ensure proper alignment. This procedure is to make sure there is no load on the wheel bearings. To fit the spline just rotate the drive and apply pressure it should slide on OK. Tighten the drive bolts when the axle is in-line with the swing arm pivot points.
