I have a heat gun. Should I turn the bike on for a few minutes, let it idle and get a reading?
Yours is practically a brand new bike, so I would be shocked if your cooling system was faulty.... so this makes it that much more interesting.

thats hot i wish i could get my oven to work like that.

Well it's not in my tune I know that. Y tuner even gave me a slightly rich tune to help but it didn't do much.

This is going to end up being a major issue. Dam.

Just took three of my bikes out and let them idle for 10min, my 2011 carp roadster has no exhaust on it as I am installing the sidewinder this weekend and yes i expect it to be very hot, my triumph Adventurer has the carbs off just now

2055 Rocket std------545f
2008 softtail----------475f
2009 Rebel 250-------170f

the oil tank at your inside right leg on the Harley was 135f

Smaller the engine the cooler the pipes the larger the engine the hotter the pipes(boy am I smart) the larger ID with the aftermarket full systems will produce more heat simply because they can exhaust more.
The stock heat shields (actually double shielded) are fantastic it stops more than half the heat from hitting you.

I feel you. It seems like we're the exceptions,

I feel you. Sorry you are having the same issue, but at least I know it's not just me.
PM me with your email, I will detail out everything thing that I've done.
Someone did mention the Tune ECU, and to lower the temp for the fan to come on.... I'll try that when I get my bike back.

Hi all,

Read this thread with a lot of interest. I have only had the Rocket for 3 weeks and am a complete buffoon when it comes to the foibles and quirks of this machine. So, out of interest I measured the temps on mine right at the header behind the heat shield. I took the bike out for 5/6 miles and then let her sit for 5 mins. See photos... 1st is of the cylinder nearest radiator and is the 2nd photo is rear cylinder.

What exhaust do you have?

Well gang, I solved the problem today! It cost me $409 but I didn't have to alter the looks of the beautiful header pipes with wrap or a cover.

After starting my morning with 1st degree burns on my inside calf as I rode with a friend, I stopped at my local BMW dealer and bought tall leather riding boots. There called the BMW Gravel Boots...almost knee high, extremely high quality and gortex lined. After slipping those on I hardly felt any heat on the inside of my leg.
