Detent spring

There was definitely no wavey washer there. Looking at the shop manual it doesn't show one there either (see attachment)
I wonder... if THIS would have caused my problem. After long rides in 5th, intermittently, I would be stuck in 5th unable to downshift
Are you 100% certain that I should have one (wavy washer)?
The bike was taken apart a few years back, perhaps they forgot to put it back on.

Yes I know but both my 05 Rockets had them in there. And it has been in the same place on my 06 and my 07 which have the newer style pressure plate and bearing. Actually I have looked and they both use the same pressure plate. The only difference is what bearing it was machined for. If you want my opinion it was put in to ensure the lifter piece does not ride on the end of the input shaft so oil still flows out it. By the manual one side of the bearing will ride on the aluminum pressure plate. Which makes one wonder why there are two large hardened thrust surfaces for a needle bearing to ride on and not put the bearing in between them. IMHO putting a wavy washer against a needle bearing would be like trying to run the needle bearing against a lock washer. It just does not seem to be a flat bearing surface. Your problem probably lies inside or maybe between the detent wheel and selector drum or a combination of both. You'll see they also added a spacer in there for later years. Spacer my arse its just a washer that will add to the rattling sound, as it sits in the undercut area of the lifter piece and is useless except for decreasing the amount of wear your fibers can have before the lifter piece hits the input shaft. Also they list two different clutch baskets in which the only difference is the back plate on the back lash eliminator. The newer one will fit fine in the older engines in fact the only real difference I have noticed is the older style with the thinner back lash eliminator plate is prone to excessive wear when larger amounts of horse power is applied




The picture I posted in the previous post above of the old style is the way it came out. Your call but you have already proven it runs fine without it.

yes its in the front behind the clutch basket pull radiator and clutch assembly change and put it back together location marked in yeller below



It can also be checked with a scope without taking the cover off but you have to pull the water pump. Oh and he needs to know what he is looking for
