Detent spring diagnosis

Howdy ya’ll! I have a 2018 Roadster. Recently it has started popping out of 2nd gear under hard acceleration/load. Not all the time but relatively consistent. After combing through the forums here (great resources btw) it seems like it might be the detent spring. Is there a way to diagnose it before tearing it apart? Bike has 28,000km roughly. I have checked/adjusted freeplay.

Thank you for the reply, I’ve seen your name through quite a few posts. How much play at the shifter is considered normal?

Dropping out of 2nd under hard acceleration is probably dogs not detent, a broke detent spring will drop gear when you let load off, as long as you are accelerating a broke detent wont come into play but lets say youre in 4th going along and let off throttle to coast it will drop out of gear, ive rode home 500 miles having to hold lever with foot to keep in gear. Several are going through transmission now because 2nd dropping out under hard acceleration. Dogs have been found worn @Sparky59 has diagnosed this on his sons. Detent would be easy but i dont think this is your problem. The play in shifter is about 2mm. Not much

I have had it pop out twice under deceleration since this started occurring, both times in 2nd gear. All other gears seem good, which I guess even more so points to the likelihood of a 2nd gear issue. I would be pretty disappointed if the transmission/dogs have failed at such a low mileage for what otherwise seems like a quality bike (this is my first Triumph). When checking the shifter play it is wayyyy more than 2mm. Seems pretty sloppy to me.

The dogs and trans problems alot of times stem from the drivers. Putting pressure on shifter which puts pressure on dogs and they get grinded, super heat and sometimes the shifter gets heel kicked or shifted to hard but overall theyre are millions of trouble free miles with relatively few people experiencing failures

Most issues like this I would believe that to be true. I did buy it second hand at 13,000km in 2021z It seemed like it had been ridden hard and put away wet but I fell in love and just had to have it. I can guarantee I am not resting on the shifter. I do ring its neck quite often, old habits die hard (used to be sport bike nutter). That being said I’ve never felt that I am being abusive to it while shifting. Lots of 2nd gear hits from 2000 rpm or so though so quite possibly self induced. One of the reasons I got this bike was all the testimonials of the reliability. I had read about the transmissions issues but lots of what I was reading was that the newer ones were much more robust. This bike is like nothing else on two wheels I have ridden and love it to bits. Will most likely do the detent spring as it’s something I am capable of/equipped to do. If the transmission has to come out/needs repair unfortunately I think I will be stuck with taking it to the dealer

A view of a good in tact mounted detent spring thru the water pump hole. Radiator still in place but coolant drained, oil still in the engine.
