Tank prop rod? What rod? I never even seen one.

I guess mine got lost within the first hundred miles cuz when I took my Rocket home, first night I stripped her down to install alarm system, went looking for the rod and only found two empty clips.

I just made my own rod out of a spare metal rod that I bent at one end in a circular hook shape to go onto that eyelet in the tank bracket.

I think the prop rod should be used to remove the tank. It is so easy to completely remove the tank. Then you have a really clear access to everything. Plus there is less chance of dinging the paint.

To remove the tank, take the front screw out. Lift the tank and prop it up. Remove the banjo bolt on the fuel line. Pull the two vent lines (just note which goes where) and disconnect the electrical lines. Remove the rear hinge bolt and lift the tank off. Sit it somewhere safe. No fuel will run out because the pump is not running.

I should post some pics the next time I have mine off.

You can still get more than a dribble of gas spilling out when you undo that fuel line bolt on the tank, so be sure to have a rag handy to catch any spill.

Otherwise, it's safe to just leave the tank unplugged like TMiller said. Just don't tip it too far forward or sideways when there's still a lot of gas in there. Unlike the fuel line connection, the filler cap does not have a sufficient seal to keep gas inside for long.
