Did a search to see if this had been covered already and couldn't find it. If you know of a good thread where this has been covered please let me know.

I'm hearing mixed recommendations on the "crash bars" (front and/or rear) on the Rocket. Will they, in fact, protect the bike and rider somewhat when you go down or do they collapse?

I'm hearing that they're only good for protection if the bike is dropped from a stand-still and, or course, are very useful for foot pegs for comfort on long trips.

Any facts/opinions/experience with these??

If they are solid steel (not thin tubes) then they will protect the engine and foot controls from road rash. In a long slide years ago on my XS1100 the engine case savers kept the expensive bits from damage. The savers were half eaten through (3/4" solid chromed steel bars). Where they attach and the toughness of the bolting used determine whether or not it will collapse like stacked BB's.

The original ones were rubbish. They replaced them with a new design a couple of years ago and the new ones are good.

Are these the ones you would get now from a dealer? Is there an aftermarket that has value?

I just ordered the Triumph bars. You must make certain that the front dresser bars stock or SKU # is A9758099 or you may get the older bars which are pretty junky quality.

I think the NewR3 ones (which are also the ones I have) are the Rivco.

I just wish they would have completed the tube all the way around the bottom. Was it RedRocket that modified his to do that? Someone here did it, I know that.

I like those German pieces, too, but they are very pricey!

Wher are you located in Joisey, PC?

Dumped my rocket twice (once a year ago when didn't realise how soft the frount suspension was, frount end collapsed on hard breaking; & the first time a year before that locking up the rear approaching a corner down a steep hill). Both times the original frount engine bars hugely saved the bike. Yes they collapsed, but acted like a sled on which the bike slid.

I have the RIVCO front bars. Hit a dog, 4o miles per hours. bike (with me close behind) slid 90 feet. Only damage to left side was the exhaust, handle bars, and foot rest. Probably could have saved most of that if I had the rear bars as well. Bars were toast, but bike is back on the road.
