You're right of course. I was talking compliance (ie manufactured) years rather than model years so shouldn't have used the word "model".
 
That is interesting, I always thought the R3 started in 2004.
I shopped both the R3 and the V2K in 2004.
Chose the V2K cause I thought I wanted a V-twin.
I did wise up 8 years later!

what is the 10th vin# a 4 or a 5
 
i think that it is a silver coating because pure aluminum would look terrible after a while. i think the silver with the chrome valve cover looks nice but others prefer the black.

Ordered mine & paid deposit in 03 had to wait till mid 04 for delivery, to me that makes it an 04 bike.
Red head engines are best.
