blacked out engine??

Are you guys painting the engines black or was that a factory option? I keep finding decent deals on bikes with the standard unpainted engines and I like the look of the black a whole lot more. Is this something I can do at home or do I just need to keep searching for a bike with a black engine?

forget which year but they where all Grey for the first couple years 04 -05 then went to Black somewhere around 06 -07

Yep 06 and 07 were the last years of the silver motor they were leftovers or at least left over blocks. But from what I have seen they have the older original style clutch parts

The silver engines also are so old that they don't have the upgrade kit etc that came out to correct issues, though the black ones should (mostly?), I would assume.

Don't assume! The final updates were incorporated in the 2008 model year, part way through after a certain serial number.

I love the look of the silver engines. I'd post a really nice picture I have of mine but that didn't go real well last time

If you want a black engine you can paint it with high heat BBQ paint.
