Anyone else want to protest helmet law?

GP, your arguments on personal responsibility have me a bit confused. Yes, I agree that it is stupid and foolish to ride without a helmet. Yes, it is somewhat selfish, too, if you have loved ones that depend on you.

However, it is a personal responsibility choice. If I choose to not wear a helmet, I am choosing to be a selfish bastard. The last thing I want is the government stepping in. Yet, that is what you are advocating.

If I choose to not wear a helmet, that's my choice. Not the government's.

Addressing another comment in this thread by Hellfire:

If I choose to not carry health insurance on myself, that's my choice. Not the government's.

It can't be both ways. Saying no to helmet laws based on freedom of choice yet advocating mandatory universal government healthcare is contradictory.

One thing I will add that didn't seem to be covered is this:

Like it or not driving a car / bike on the streets/highways is a privilege. It is not a right, therefore you have no rights to do Whatever you want. If a state decides you need to wear a clown outfit when riding a motorcycle, guess what you will have to do just that. The government is not revoking your rights by creating helmet laws, they are controlling your privileges. Your still free to do whatever you want on your land. If you want to ride on government owned property then you have to play by their rules.

For the record I don't see the point in helmet laws, or other things similar. I believe every rider should go through a msf course to get a license, and then what safety gear they use is up to them. My opinion is that Your stupid if you don't wear a helmet, just like guys I work with ***** about wearing hard hats. Nobody has had something fall on their head yet, but you don't want to not have it on if something did.

I suspect you're right. I often prove that I'm not smart enough to actually say what I really mean. Let me try again.

I AM NOT in favor of helmet laws. I do not believe that its the government's responsibility to infringe on personal choice. And I certainly do not believe in government mandated health care.

I do believe in personal responsibility.

Also let me take this opportunity to say that while I have called certain actions foolish, I by no means meant to suggest that anyone here is a fool. Intelligent, rational people are capable of foolish actions. I know I've certainly committed my fair share. Not that I'm particularly intelligent or rational, as I've probably demonstrated in this thread.

Then it appears, sir, that you and I share a common outlook. Somewhat liberatarian, somewhat constitutionalist, yet moderate in many ways.

Well rats man I agree with everything you said pretty much? That's kinda cool we don't even have to agree to disagree on most stuff. I respect your views on religion and that"s cool, and I am not a sales rep anymore, so work it out for yourself as you seem to already have done. At the end of the day I am 100% with you about individual rights, but man it makes it a boring discussion if we all agree, lol...

PS ...your are 100% right about not taking it lightly and Motorcycling is a inherently dangerous somewhat defensive activity in traffic, especially watching out for everyone else all the time while trying to enjoy the ride, add two up and your responsibility of risking the lose of both parents doubles no doubt, I respect peoples rights to weigh the risk and the price and make and informed decision and I respect their descicion to ride as they see fit unless it interferes with other peoples safety or violates the law. You sound like a good dude, I did not mean to come across personally attacking you......

I feel that if government is going to tell me what to do to be safe citing health care costs, then why am I paying $1340 a month for health insurance while I'm unemployed? If they are so concerned with my health and force non-Democratic and unconstitutional laws on me that take away my choice, then why do I even need health insurance?

My government cares so much about me that even they export work to other countries. We have immigration policies in place that allows for a foreigner with $100 in his pocket to enter and choose a PHD or 7-11 on the house. And discrimination laws are so twisted, we've made it acceptable to discriminate against a white male for employment and it's okay to tell him to his face why he's not "quota" material.

Weren't England and France the bad guys in the 1700's for their monarchy issues? lol

****, HF. You're starting to sound like a Republican! (or at least what I used to think were Republicans)

Some times I ride "foolishly" and three years ago on the fourth of july I was doing just that when I totalled my 05 graphite rocket and was told with a helmet on I would have broken my neck and been in a wheel chair for the rest of my life well thank god i was riding "foolishly" cuz I know I would be dead now there is no way I would live that way or put anyone who " cares for me" to go through that . Call me selfish but there would have been an" accident " and I would not be here now .
So call me a moron an idiot a selfish jerk but I will ride wearing what i want and live each day is if it is my last cuz it very well could be .

Oh and on another note as of july first the state of minnesota repealed the seatbelt law or thats the rumor anyway .
One more choice we Minnesotans get to make

I'm not a saint either. I have and do occasionally ride without a helmet when I go to Texas. It feels weird and is not particularly enjoyable. I feel "foolish".

I do celebrate the fact that you have the choice. And now the choice to drive without a seatbelt? I didn't think that would ever happen.

We will disagree on the legitamacy of whether you would have been injured worse if you had a helmet on during your accident. It's just my opinion and nothing more.

With the statistics laid out on a bathtub curve (i.e. hazard function), the uptick on the left side for times when wearing a helmet would cause more injury would be much, much smaller than the uptick on the right side representing the time when not wearing a helmet led to more injury. The left side would approach 0 so much that the probability would be considered negligible.

Yeah, lately I even sound weird to myself. LOL

I see us all as birds in a cage with our wings clipped but sent out every night to find food and shelter on our own. The rich family's prize pet to be presented at parties but hobbled so we don't get away or eat the h'orderves.
