An R+D Thread - Different instruments.

OK - will commence in earnest this holiday weekend - Just ordered a Koso mount as this came without one.
Made the mistake of not looking closely - coming from Italy and their post is slooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooow

Whilst rummaging this fell out of a box. Gives an idea of other possible options. The Top one is a KOSO 55mm and the bottom one is a KOSO 48mm. Both from their "DigiDark" range. Top one is a Speedo and is available also as Tacho - the smaller one is only available as Tacho, but oddly the digits are larger. The 55mm gauges have things like temp guages and clocks or fuel gauges in - the little one is pure Tacho.

And the output from this Chinese thing - despite documentation that says 5V - puts out about 11V - my GPS speed sensors work on 6-32V. So wiring has just been simplified.

Need some info if anybody knows. Triumph Fuel Level sensor resistance at full and empty.

Any cluster that one could buy that would replace the original set up?

I know that Wayne Tripp has used a KOSO RX2N and that the DAKOTA DIGITAL can be made to fit (ask @Mittzy ) - At a cost. There was a guy on the dotcom site that had a Dakota fitted too. But plug and play - to my knowledge - Nope.

I'm sure that you could persuade Ken @DEcosse to do surgery.

tbh the most hassle comes from the warning lights. Now if we can persuade Ken to make a surrogate LED warning light cluster the choice of clocks gets MUCH easier. To put it into perspective - The Speedo and Tacho need a total of 4 wires - VOLTS PLUS, GROUND, SPEED PULSE, TACHO PULSE.

What would be your preference aesthetically? - Analogue, digital, mix? - I personally like semi-subliminal stuff.

This Chinese thing has 19 wires - 6 of which are no use at all on an R3.
Tomorrow "snipping" commences. Would have been today - but a "decent" Cuba-Libre intervened.
Right now I wish I had another R3 to do this sort of R&D on.

So I am almost ready to test. I will initially do the road test in the car as it's easier to connect up cameras etc. I'll see if I can knock up a quick and dirty mount for the car - otherwise I'll have to wait for the one on order. The Koso mounts are rubber isolated.

But here is a compare video. Shows OEM clocks (ModelYear 2009) sweep - Then the little 48mm KOSO sweeps (it is sold as a Tacho but I have it wired up to a GPS speed sensor as a speedo) - Then I plugged the Chinese one in to sweep.


Unless you are happy playing with electrics or are massively strapped for cash and need a new one - I would be cautious of Chinese e-bay specials. The documentation is terrible. Also some of the "features" are not configurable - like the shift light.
KOSO supplies very good documentation, ime. And are far more configurable
Also - for EU owners the KOSO is certified as a replacement.

But there is a price premium. Still much cheaper than stock.
I now need an old wiring harness or will have to make one - and RS-online's web is not letting me in.

Just watched your vid and you obviously stole 'My look' now outdated. I used to live in a few of those long sleeve T's about 10 years ago and still have a few.

The 55mm Koso Digital

I did actually use this on the R3 for a while as a GPS speedo. See the ODO value.
I fitted the 48mm KOSO as the digits are bigger. But was 100% reliable.

This KOSO has a fuel gauge which I did use for a while - albeit not calibrated and it was scary to watch the tank deplete.
But if the sensor wire is not plugged in - the gauge part does not activate. Which is fine.

The Chinese thing not only has to be connected to a resistance to kill the warning light - the gauge is always there and the light and gauge are inextricably linked.
