I decided to post this as it may be helpful to some idiot other than myself.
It's a bit long but good read if you want to laugh at me.
After my tail tidy install I decided to go for a nice ride. When I fired up the rocket the display showed something like... "fob battery low check manual"
O.K. will do when I get home. Stopped for lunch and guess what no start. No nothing.
Checked Google to see how to use the fob with the sensor on rear of bike. No go.
Friend drives 30 miles to pick me up to get the spare at my house. 30 miles back. Again nada !
Tried moving the key around but not a thing. So maybe the battery not the fob?
Tried to jump with his car, of course engine was off to avoid frying the electronics.
So display says its the fob, remote start does not work and seems like it "could" be the battery. Bike tried to start but just could not get there. Sure seemed like bad battery but why no jump start. Even tried my NOCO portable jumper but just not firing up. Lots of clicking etc.
Late at night, tired, cold all that. I leave the rocket in a Taco Bell parking lot in a not nice part of town. We drive home. Hope she stays put.
This morning at daybreak 6 A.M. I drive the 30 miles with my trailer. Never tried to load a 600 plus pound bike without assistance of the engine !
Got 2/3 of the way up the ramp and lost momentum. Oh yes I also lost control. She falls to the right and is hanging on the trailer. My new Rocket !!
Must have been the adreneline rush because I picked it up like it was a 300 pound bike.
I was amazed that the only damage was a slightly bent foot peg. I have looked her over and no scuffs, dents broken mirrors. Maybe there is a God Back the bike way up get lots of momentum with my running start and she is on the trailer.
Drive the 30 miles home and unload. O.K. what now? Try all 3 keys no start, no groan no nothing.
Must be a weak battery but why the key fob error message on the display.
THAT IS ODD, THE MULTIMETER SHOWS SOMETHING LIKE 12.6 VOLTS.
Should be GTG.
In desperation one last time I try to fire her up using the fob . Thankfully the bike was in a dark garage and I noticed the tinniest spark by the neg. battery post.
Now that should not be sparking as i know I fully tightened the terminals after reinstalling battery which had been removed during tail tidy install.
I look closely and all my fault! When reconnecting the leads to the battery terminals I somehow created a tiny loop in the thin black wire which goes to the neg terminal. This is where the spark was coming from. In other words the thin wire was connected at its end but was also "connected"via that little bit of wire which worked its way under the battery post.
Moral of story: Make sure you double check your electrical connection s.
2 questions:
1.Why the fob error reading?
2. Since the wire was connected to the terminal why swas I gettin g some sort of short. Seems like I in a sense had the wire connected at 2 points so i would think no short.
I'll say it I am the idiot
