Check the service history thoroughly...some of the R3's were total lemons with everthing going wrong( friend had one..an 08 model) & some were great!
You could of course buy a used 05 cheaply & ship it to Carpenter racing. They will turn it into a fire breathing monster ( albet a cuddly one) & go thru the internals whilst they are at it.
My riding bud has the first year's R3 ( 2002?) not sure but we take long road trips every year and he has had ZERO problems with his bike! NONE!
I think it IS the luck of the draw and if your 2005 bike keeps chugging.. don't let the issues that others have had scare you.

'04s were sold as '05s and a lot of them, including mine, had multitudes of problems with cam drives, tunes, transmissions, output bearings, switches, corrosion, etc. Hopefully by now any '05 would have been cured of ills. Prices here in WA seem to be all over the map.
