05-update kit

Ok so I went and measured the engine and since the crate was originally designed to ship a head and cams to carpenter for some work it would have been 12" x 12" x 20" internal. I then lined it with polystyrene insulation for padding in shipment. So for use as a mount I pull the side insulation out added a second layer or actually used the layer from the top in with the bottom one so the cam cover sat on it when the engine was upside down. it worked well when I pulled the engine I just sat the box over the top of the engine and then rolled it over to split it open. I did pull all the components off the front of the engine while it sat on the ATV jack prior to turning it upside down. But only because I had blower stuff to pull first. from the looks of it it would not matter. I did wait until it was upside down to pull the fly wheel and rear stuff. again only because I thought it would be a little more stable when removing the fly wheel. Now that I have done it I would say it also does not matter.
 
Thanks, I made one today. just have to wait for shims to finish valve adjustment. All but 3 were out of spec, but I will be able to swap shims for all but 2. I will say that although I haven't split the cases yet I am finding very little wrong so far for 40K miles. the spline between drive shaft and bevel box was bone dry, which I think was producing the noise that made me think the output bearing was bad.(it was not). A little wear on the crank sprocket teeth, but it was on tight. That's it til I get in the trans. I wonder, does anyone know is the oil pressure switch a standard auto part or do have to get OEM? and could any one recommend a tune (tune ecu)for D&D 3-2 and Ramair filter ?(just got)
 
I have to ask when you did the out put shaft. which way of the bearing was the seal facing (on the front bearing)?

The seal on the front bearing was facing front, on the rear bearing the seal was to the rear

So you are definitely a lucky man as your front bearing was in backwards. how many miles on the bike? I do not remember if you stated it in the original post. My guess is it is lower mileage!

Actually it is 40,000. I was thinking the issue was the rear bearing. I will have to check out the front one better(it is still apart) There definitely was a grating noise going on in that area end of last summer, that is what prompted me to take it apart. Now I am feeling lucky I didn't have a lockup !
 
They both can go out the front mostly because once it is in backwards it can not get the correct supply of oil from the transmission side. The rear I have looked at many ways but I can only find one way oil gets to it which is by the grace of god the engineers hoped oil would migrate back there. That IMO is why Triumph switched to a totally sealed bearing in the rear packed with grease.
 
Got my motor upside-down, ready to split the cases. got the new bearings on the damper shaft, am amazed the old ones seem good still. oh well, hope to have the tranny done and be going back together this weekend. Am missing my Rocket !
